Request for Proposal: Community Selected Mural on the Sand Creek Regional Greenway

The Sand Creek Regional Greenway Partnership (SCRGP) is seeking proposals from artists or artist teams that have experience installing large outdoor murals. We are looking to select an artist that can create and install a 200 to 250-foot-long and 13-foot-tall mural along the Sand Creek Regional Greenway in Northeast Denver. The mural will be at the Smith Road trailhead at 9450 Smith Road, Denver, CO 80238.

Project Background
: The SCRGP has a five-year plan to fill all 3,000 linear feet of the Sand Creek Art walk walls with art. The goal is to install one new piece of art each year. This year, the Sand Creek Regional Greenway Partnership will turn the selection of the newest addition to the Sand Creek Art Walk over to the community.

This project includes a Mural Festival on September 14th. The community will be invited to participate in a “paint-by-numbers" engagement opportunity during this festival to kick off the start of this mural. The selected artist or artist team should be able to create space within their design process for this one-day festival.

The Sand Creek Regional Greenway is a 13.1 mile trail and wildlife corridor connecting three cities: Commerce City, Denver, and Aurora, and three counties: Adams, Denver, and Arapahoe.

The community would like to see a mural that communicates:

The importance of maintaining a connection to nature within an urban landscape

Shows native Colorado plants

Displays roots, leaves, flowers, and branches

The mural should aim to connect everyone to the land and inspire all to be stewards of the outdoors

* Thanks to community feedback, we have made adaptions and clarifications to the request for this year's mural proposals:

The original ask was for a mural between 275 to 300 linear feet. We have reduced the size to 200 to 250 liner feet.

We would like to clarify, though there are aspects to the mural the community is more likely to gravitate towards, this is an opportunity for artists to propose a design they may have already created but not yet installed. We understand this year's proposals do not come with compensation for designs which is why we encourage artists and their teams to submit a design they may have already created and are searching for space to implement their design instead of working to generate a new design specifically for this RFP.

These adaptions were made on 7/19/2024

The timeline for the project is as follows:

July 31st - RFP closes

August 1st- Community starts to vote for their favorite mural

August 7th - Voting closes

August 8th - Muralist selected and notified

August 10th - Mural shared with the community at the annual SCRGP fundraiser

August 11th to September 10th- Wall Prep

September 14th - Mural festival with up to 200 participants between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Mid-November- Mural and protective coating completed

Scope of Work:

Allow SCRGP to use original mural art work for future marketing and merchandise purposes

The mural must be between 200 to 250 feet long and 13 feet tall.

The mural must be completed by mid November 2024.

Creating a design that allows the community to participate in a "paint-by-numbers" activity on September 14th during the Mural Festival.

Proposal Requirements:
Proposals should include the following:

Example of previous work.

Three references (Name, relationship, phone number, and e-mail address)

A 1000 character or less statement of interest in the project.

Provide images of a proposed mural concept that the community can review and vote on. This should be detailed enough to allow community members to confidently vote on your proposed design.

A brief description of how the artist(s) anticipate working within the given timeframe.

A list of any specialized equipment or knowledge required for installation.

Evaluation Criteria:

The community will have the opportunity to review your proposed images for the mural, statement of interest, and any additional information about the mural that you offer. Selection will be based on projects that fit within the budget, proposed images that have not yet been installed elsewhere, artists that can attend the September 14 mural festival, and the proposal that receives the most community votes.

Budget/Payment

Statement acknowledging the project’s total budget cannot exceed $35,000. The $35,000 includes all your proposal’s expenses, including execution of mural, materials, rental equipment, general liability insurance coverage and contingency (if applicable). A detailed budget is only required for the final selected artist.
